Their cold hardiness makes them excellent for northern climates, but they also handle heat reasonably well with shade and water.

 

🐔 Appearance

  • Solid jet-black feathers with a beautiful green beetle-like sheen in sunlight

  • Red single comb and wattles

  • Medium to large, rounded body

  • Roosters are larger with more dramatic tail feathers

🥚 Egg Production

Black Australorps are famous for:

  • Starting to lay around 16–20 weeks

  • Producing large brown eggs

  • Strong, consistent laying (especially in the first 2–3 years)

They are one of the most productive pure breeds available. Laying up to 300 eggs yearly. 

White Ameraucana

  • Famous for blue eggs

  • 180–250 eggs per year

  • Medium size

🐓 Appearance

  • Beard and “muffs” (fluffy cheeks)

  • Pea comb (good for cold climates)

🏡 Temperament

  • Friendly and curious

  • Good backyard bird

  • Hardy in cold weather

Good foragers and always alert the rest of the flock to danger. tend to be loners.
